1st Bali Music and Brain Workshop

The 1st Bali Workshop on Music & Brain was held from 10-12 January, 2024 at the Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center in Bali. The event was organized by Prof. Stella Christie and the Tsinghua Laboratory of Brain and Intelligence of Tsinghua University. The workshop presented lectures and dialogues from experts in neuroscience, arts, psychology, and biomedical engineering from universities such as Tsinghua University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Calgary, University of Minnesota, among others. In total the workshop was attended by 33 participants and explored topics including: harmonies across species: exploring the evidence of music evolution and origin, unravelling the tapestry: the development of music perception in humans, striking the right chord: optimizing stimuli and testing conditions in music perception research, sonic splendor: investigating music aesthetics in concert halls and live performances, orchestrating healing: the timing and applications of music therapy in clinical and counseling settings, and bridging creativity and cognition: the imperative of integrating music/art education with brain sciences in universities. The workshop also included a live performance from a 21 piece Gamelan orchestra, during which participants were invited to join and play in the performance.
